General Criteria
- GPA- 2.75 or higher overall
- Is classified in the fall semester as a full or part-time (only one part-time scholarship is available), a sophomore, junior, or senior nursing student at Prairie View A&M University. Applicants must complete all pre-requisite courses for upper division clinical studies by spring. Sophomores must have completed all courses required during the first year and maintain a 2.75 GPA.
- Has membership in a professional organization e.g. TNSA, Chi Eta Phi, PVSNA, Sigma Theta Tau, etc.
- Demonstrates leadership abilities including participation in student organizations, academic and/or extracurricular activities, citizenship and service to the school and commitment to nursing.
- Is active in civic and community organizations e.g. American red cross, church, sorority/fraternity, and health fairs, etc.…
- Two (2) letters of recommendation.
- Faculty member -including GPA and graduation date/status verification (must not be graduating May or August of the current year).
- Sponsor of one of the organizations verifying active membership and participation.
SPECIFIC CRITERIA
In addition to the general criteria listed above, the following are criteria specific to individual scholarships.
Competence
- Demonstrates ability to use scientific methods of investigating a problem
- Collaborates with an interdisciplinary team in planning patient care
- Shows competency in performing nursing skills
- Demonstrates integration of theory and practice
- Is sensitive to patient’s health problems/needs
International student
- Must be an international student
First Generation Student
- Must be the first person in his /her family to seek a B.S. degree in Nursing
Mental Health Nursing
- Enrolled in mental health nursing with a grade of “B” or above in both theory and clinical practice
- Must submit an essay stating why you choose mental health nursing as your personal goal
Advanced Degree (BSN to MSN )
- Must have overall GPA 3.0
- Submit an essay stating how as an advanced clinician you plan to lead and serve vulnerable populations to improve health disparities
- Must be seeking MSN
